《布什与中国》一书出版 美国驻华大使雷德致信祝贺

由我校政府管理学院博士后王堃主持编著的《布什与中国》一书日前由华夏出版社出版。该书回顾了两位布什总统与中国交往的历史，认为布什家族在中美关系的发展史上扮演了十分重要的角色。布什家族的历史贡献，以及这一时期中美关系发展的经验和教训，应该被完整准确地记录下来，并且认真进行总结、研究。以史为镜，鉴往知来。

 

 

该书得到了美国布什总统图书馆的大力支持，全书所附的珍贵图片均由该馆独家提供。小布什总统的弟弟尼尔•布什先生亲自为该书作序。该书出版后，美国驻华大使雷德又专门致信表示祝贺。大使称赞，本书将为中文读者和研究人员提供非常重要的资源，帮助他们理解老布什总统以及中美两国关系史。

《布什与中国》序言

This book that has been written about my father’s life is a great tribute to the Bush family and to my father’s good name. He has been a champion for building bridges of understanding between nations and has been particularly interested in developing closer ties with the Chinese people. There is a mutual respect and affection that has developed that has served our two nations well over the past 32 years and has helped to build a platform for close ties well into the 21st century.

 

 

My father’s life has been a model of service. Hopefully by reading this book others will be moved in small or large ways to serve others in their own lives. My father’s legacy will be far reaching. A hallmark of this legacy will be the leadership he has demonstrated in improving relations with countries in Asia, in particular with the People’s Republic of China. His knowledge of Asia began during World War II as an eighteen year old Navy pilot. He heroically fought the Japanese in the South Pacific and became all too aware of the horror of war and of the nuances of Asian geopolitics. Later he would serve the United States in various capacities including UN Ambassador. It was during his tenure in the early 1970s that the People’s Republic of China was admitted into the United Nations and that he was able to establish his first contact and friendships with Chinese officials.

 

 

The first time my brothers and sister and I were invited to China was to visit our parents in the summer of 1975 when Dad was serving as the “bicycling Ambassador”. Those were fascinating times. While the Chinese economy and conditions for freedom have advanced significantly, the spirit of kindness has not changed. Our family would ride our bikes in a sea of bikers from the ambassador’s residence to Tiananmen Square or other destinations in Beijing. Many Chinese had not seen long nosed westerners before and couldn’t help but stare. We probably caused lots of accidents as people looked at us and didn’t mind where they were going. There was an innocent curiosity in their stares, a kindness that exuded from everyone we met. Since that summer of 1975 I have been to China more than thirty times. That sense of friendliness and connection still exists and the warmth of our friendship has grown.

 

 

As Vice President and President of the United States of America my father dedicated himself to building a strong bilateral relationship with The People’s Republic of China. His frequent visits to China and meeting with Chinese delegations in the USA has moved his friendship towards the Chinese people closer and closer. My father has often said that the US-China relationship is the most important bilateral relationship for the United States going forward. That he has spent many years of his public life in promoting better understanding, closer cooperation, and mutually beneficial policies will be a legacy that carries on for years to come.

 

 

Please accept our family’s gratitude for publishing this volume that describes the life of a great man. May it serve to bring our countries closer.

父亲的一生是服务的典范。希望通过阅读此书，能帮助读者们在有生之年，以各种方式服务他人。父亲创造的价值将一直延续。他曾充分展现了改善与亚洲国家关系的领导才能，特别是与中华人民共和国。他对亚洲的认识始于第二次世界大战期间，作为一名18岁的美国海军飞行员，他在南太平洋英勇地抗击日本侵略者，并从此深刻认识到战争的残酷以及亚洲地缘政治的微妙差别。此后，他在美国的各种位置上服务过，包括出任美国驻联合国大使。上个世纪的七十年代初期，在他的任期内，中华人民共和国恢复了在联合国安全理事会的常任理事国地位，他首次接触到了新中国的官员，并且建立了友谊。

 

 

1975年的夏天，我的哥哥和姐姐，还有我，被邀请到中国探望父母，父亲被称作 “自行车大使”，那是令人沉醉的时光。当时中国的经济和自由状况被高度关注，但人民仍很纯朴善良，在自行车的人海中，我们全家从大使官邸骑着车去天安门，去北京的其它地方。很多中国人以前从没有见过长着长鼻子的西方人，很多人看着我们甚至忘记自己要去哪儿了，他们的凝视中充满了天真和好奇，我们看到的每一个人都充满着善良的气质。自1975年的那个夏天起，我已去中国超过30次，友善和热情仍然存在，我们的友谊也在成长。

 

 

作为美国的副总统和总统，父亲致力于与中华人民共和国建立牢固的双边关系。他频繁地访问中国，在美国会见中国代表团，他与中国人民的友谊得以愈来愈深。父亲经常说，美中关系是美国当前和未来最重要的两国关系，他把自己的一生都奉献给了公共事业，他的促进理解、紧密合作、互助互惠的方针将得延伸到未来。

 

请接受我们全家对这册伟人传记出版的感谢之情，愿它使我们两个国家更紧密地联系在一起。
